Folio 99: R. Walpole to Earl of Rochford. Discussion with De Mello over Van Nes, who De Mello insists is an unprincipled scoundrel and not a British subject. Encloses copy of a letter (f.102) smuggled out of prison by Van Nes, which does not help to clarify matters. De Mello continues to procrastinate over the Argyle and Connell cases.
Date and place: 1772 Sept 1 Lisbon.
