Folio 242: R. Walpole to Earl of Rochford. Is convinced that there are no secret negotiations between Portugal and France for a commercial treaty and that Lord Harcourt "is extremely imposed upon in this Intelligence," by interested French informants. He is convinced that Pombal is quite sincere when he states that Britain will always be Portugal's favoured customer though he is anxious to build up Portuguese industries, including textiles as far as possible. Relevant documentation (ff.250-70) enclosed. "My friend" the Papal Nuncio has also assured him that no Franco-Portuguese "Marriage Treaty is on foot, or ever will be." Relations between Courts of Rome and Lisbon are now extremely cordial. Dissolution of the marriage of Pombal's younger son is now "in agitation.".
Date and place: 1772 June 12 Lisbon.
