Folio 219: R. Walpole to Earl of Rochford. On re-reading the Portuguese papers concerning the ship Argyle (ff.179-88), he now has some doubts about that case. He fears that "it cannot well be argued, that a right of residence given to subjects of England in the Brazils, gives them a right of navigation and trade directly from England to the Brazils," especially in view of the wording of article 11 of the 1654 Treaty. Asks Rochford for clarification and guidance.
Date and place: 1772 March [sic for May] 18 Lisbon.
