Folio 79: W. H. Lyttleton to Viscount Weymouth. Encloses copies of correspondence received from Count of Oeiras (ff.83-90). He thinks that Oeiras gave satisfaction in the case of Mr G. Wye at Oporto "as a kind of sweetner, which may in some measure excuse the disregard he has hitherto shown to my remonstrances in the much more important business of the corn." Oeiras polite but evasive about making a payment to the widow of John Bristow. Discussion with Oeiras on his views of the new Pope and the foreign policies of France and Spain. Portuguese envoy at Rome will remain "if it should be resolved to secularize the Jesuits, but if not he would depart." Oeiras regards Grimaldi as very pro-French. Decision to disband the Regiment of Royal Volunteers, and raise two new units instead. Oeiras on the lessons to be drawn from the operations of the 1762 campaign in Portugal.
Date and place: 1769 July 1 Lisbon.
