Folio 111: Minutes of Hay's farewell conferences with Dom Luis da Cunha and the Count of Oeiras. Reasons why presents no longer given to departing envoys, since Oeiras (then Carvalho e Mello) had not been given an adequate one on leaving for Vienna. Reasons for decline of British trade in Portugal blamed on the earthquake, the war, destruction of the Customs House and the intrigues of the Jesuits, French, and their RC supporters, and blockade of Nova Colonia by the Spaniards. Discussion over the differences between the Treaty of Utrecht and the Treaty of Paris (1763). Oeiras' fixation on the plots of the Jesuits, and his allegation that the Duke of Lafoens had been poisoned by the Marchioness of Tavora. They both assured him of Portugal's lasting resolve to maintain the alliance with England.
