Folio 5: E. Hay to H. Seymour Conway. Encloses copy (f.7) of a letter to Dom Luis da Cunha, warning him that the complaints of the British merchants in Portugal have been submitted to the Board of Trade for examination and report, after which a most serious representation for redress will be made by royal command to the King of Portugal. Hopes this letter will have the desired effect, but doubts if the Portuguese Court will allow `British subjects to have established houses in the Brazils', as they should do by the 1654 Treaty.
Date and place: 1766 Jan 12 Lisbon.
