Folio 279: E. Hay to Earl of Halifax. Renewed drive by the government against gold smuggling and seizures of contraband gold under new tough law. His interview with Francisco Xavier de Mendonça on this problem and advice that matters should not be pushed too far asthe merchant community was very upset. Mendonça replied that British merchants had no need to worry just now, but should be strictly ordered not to receive any contraband gold, as Crown was determined to enforce the laws.
