Folio 178: Martinho de Mello e Castro to Earl of Egremont. King Joseph acknowledges with gratitude King George's promise to make no peace with France or Spain which does not include the full restitution of all Portuguese metropolitan and colonial territory taken during the war. But King Joseph does regret deeply that King George has not kept him informed of the peace negotiations, and regrets to note that the French Court has been much more open with the Spanish and cooperated closely with it. They reproach Portugal for being merely a satellite of England, and treated by her with contempt, as indeed she has been. Danger that France and Spain may delay making peace with Portugal, just as they did at Utrecht in 1713-15. King Joseph is therefore investing Martinho de Mello e Castro to act with full powers on his behalf, and requests King George to notify the French and Spanish governments that he will not sign the preliminaries of a peace with France and Spain without Portugal's participation as an ally on equal terms, and that French envoy (Duke of Nivernois) at London and the Duke of Bedford at Paris, be informed accordingly.
Date and place: 1762 Oct 9 London.
