Folio 140: Earl of Egremont to E. Hay. Notifies him of the Franco-British agreement to discuss terms of peace. The Duke of Bedford, named British negotiator in Paris, has been instructed `to make the specific inclusion of Portugal a condition sine qua non' of any peace between Britain, France and Spain, and not to sign any armistice without including Portugal and evacuation of all territory taken by French and Spaniards. Portuguese government informed accordingly. De Mello has presented a list of Portuguese demands (enclosed), and King George III will back to the hilt all Portuguese claims relating to or arising out of this war, but cannot concern himself with anything of earlier date. Count Oeiras should be pressed to nominate a reliable minister to negotiate on behalf of Portugal, or send the Duke of Bedford full powers to do so. King George will take particular care of Portugal's security in these negotiations but cannot `suffer any unnecessary delays to retard or obstruct the salutary work of his Peace with the Crowns of France and Spain'.
Date and place: 1762 Sept 7 London.
