Folio 247: E. Hay to Earl of Egremont. Portuguese intelligence from Spain indicates that the Queen-Mother is very influential, but that the Spanish ministry is in great confusion. Portuguese think the Spaniards have missed their opportunity in striking a decisive blow, which they could have done in February. Portuguese are now more prepared to receive them, `and I don't doubt will make a good defence.' Is doubtful of the value of Portuguese warships, but if reinforced by some from England they might be `much more effectual.'.
Date and place: 1762 Apr 13 Lisbon.
