Folio 52: Kinnoull to W. Pitt. Reactions to recent changes of the government at Madrid. Disgrace of two of the natural sons of the late King John V, on the grounds that they had been intriguing with the Papal Nuncio. The Pope had done his utmost to avoid a break with Portugal by meeting all the Portuguese demands and dropping his support of the Jesuits and of the Nuncio. Merle is going to France on leave, and Kinnoull hopes the Lagos affair will be allowed to drop.
