Folio 1: Royal Instructions for the Earl of Kinnoull as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to King Joseph I. He is to express King George II's deep regret for the unintended breach of Portuguese neutrality in the destruction of the French squadron by Admiral Boscawen off Lagos. Is further to assure King Joseph of the `particular sensibility' with which King George has followed `these most interesting events' in Portugal [i.e. expulsion of the Jesuits]. He is to report on condition of affairs in Portugal, reactions to the expulsion of the Jesuits, and keep a close watch on conduct of the French ambassador.
