Folio 145: E. Hay to W. Pitt. Death of Queen of Spain. Accident to King Joseph as the result of a fall on the night of 3 Sept. which incapacitates him from business. Queen is acting as Regent during his illness. Actually, the King was wounded in an attempt to assassinate him or the servant who was accompanying him, on a nocturnal visit to a mistress. Court trying to keep this a deep secret `but it is talked of abroad more publicly than prudently.'.
Date and place: 1758 Sept 13 Lisbon.
