Description

Folio 35: E. Hay to W. Pitt. Thanks for his appointment as Envoy, but unfortunately his official credential letter to King of Portugal has been wrongly worded "John" instead of "Joseph". Portuguese have accepted it pro tem. but request it be replaced by another. Graciously received in his new capacity by King and royal family. Will try to get the fraudulent debtor, William Thomas Serjeant, sent home. Money promised over the cargo of the pirated English ship sold at Pernambuco not yet recovered from the Commissary of Marine but he is still trying.

Date and place: 1757 Aug 24 Lisbon.
