Folio 308: A. Castres to H. Fox. Disgrace of Mons. de Mendonça one of the three Secretaries of State, banished to a country-house near Oporto. Possible reasons for it. Reward of 20,000 cruzados offered to anyone who will denounce plotters against the lives of the King's Ministers. Disgrace and removal of the Administrator of the Bishopric of Oporto over the Pawson affair. French ambassador has left, allegedly highly disgruntled, despite the usual present of golden bars to the value of about £1,100. Court is glad to be rid of him for `his free and unguarded reflections upon the customs and manners of the country, not sparing at times the royal family itself.'.
