Folio 171: A. Castres to Earl of Holdernesse. Repercussions of the famine in Spain on the Portuguese corn-trade. Order issued for a survey of all holdings of wheat by foreign and domestic warehouses which has aroused much discontent and opposition from the British Factory. Encloses relevant correspondence concerning this crisis (ff.177-87). His interviews and correspondence with Carvalho about it, and Portuguese contention that some British firms were in fact taking advantage of the crisis to corner supplies and sell them at inflated prices. He admits that this is true, so is proceeding very cautiously; but the Factory are very dissatisfied with what they regard as the lukewarm support they receive from him and Consul Crowle (ff.188-191).
Date and place: 1753 Sept 6, 11 Lisbon.
