Folio 109: A. Castres to Duke of Newcastle. Treaty of Madrid still being kept a close secret and he cannot yet obtain a copy of the printed text. It has been warmly welcomed by some and severely criticized by others. Sudden death of Secretary of State Azevedo Coutinho. Speculates over his probable successor. Carvalho, former Envoy in England, not thought to be sufficiently `in the good graces of Fray Gaspar, the chief director here at present .. though powerfully supported by the Queen'. King John now very ill indeed.
