Folio 101: A. Castres to Duke of Bedford. Has now had a glimpse of the secret Treaty of Madrid signed in Jan. 1750, but cannot yet obtain a printed copy. It concerns the surrender of Nova Colonia to the Spaniards in return for territorial concessions elsewhere in S. America and settles all disputes between the two Crowns since the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494. Encloses copy of Azevedo Coutinho's reply about the seizure of the Pretty Betsy (ff.99, 103).
