Folio 179: B. Keene to Duke of Newcastle. His interviews with Cardinal da Mota and Duke of Sotomayor, correspondence with Valparaiso, etc. from all of which it is evident that Spain will not treat for a separate peace without France. Relevant papers enclosed (ff.183, 190, others wanting). King John has had another very violent seizure, but is now better. Rosenberg's reactions to news of French and Spanish victories over the Austrians in Italy and Flanders. Cardinal da Mota's pro-French attitude and his assertion to Rosenberg that English would let down their allies as they did in the Treaty of Utrecht. Carvajal at Madrid is well disposed, but has insufficient influence with his King.
