Description

Folio 166: Charles Compton to Lord Carteret and Duke of Newcastle. His interview and arguments with Azevedo and Cardinal da Mota over the capture of the Santa Roza by H.M.S. Romney and Portuguese demand for her restitution. He thinks the Portuguese have a good legal case. Portuguese also still annoyed over Capt. Geary R.N. and the incident at Madeira (ff.125-35). Decision of Admiral Matthews to restore the Indiaman Virgin of Mercy with the money on board has given the greatest satisfaction at Court. King John leaving tomorrow for the baths at Caldas.
