Folio 310: Abstract of a letter [by Henry Stewart] from on board H.M.S. Severn in Rio harbour. Return of Severn and Pearl to Rio after losing 290 men and suffering appalling conditions off Cape Horn. No news of the other ships of the squadron. `The Governor and thePortuguese in general are extremely kind to us,' the 130 survivors, most of whom are `not able to crawl with scurvy.' Spanish fleet of Admiral Pizarro likewise dispersed after suffering heavy loss (cf. S.P.89/40).
