Folio 304: J. B. Parker to Duke of Newcastle. Latest intelligence from Galicia. Lieutenant and boat's crew of H.M.S. Argyle still confined, and the only English-speaking pilot at Oporto (f.276) still forbidden to have any contact with English ships. Portuguese Secretary of State has backed up the Governor on these points. Doubts very much if he can find another reliable man to take his letters to H.M. ships. H.M.S. Gibraltar is cruising against Galician privateers off Oporto but is too slow to catch them. H.M.S. Grampus or another sloop would be more suitable. Spanish Crown has authorised a subsistence payment to the prisoners-of-war in Galicia, but from 14 May to 31 August only.
Date and place: 1741 Oct 11 Oporto.
