Folio 222: Lord Tyrawley to Duke of Newcastle. Elaborating on f. 220. He explains that he wants either to be promoted to ambassador or else recalled home, since he cannot possibly afford the expense of staying any longer at Lisbon as an envoy, nor is he willing to be of inferior status to the French ambassador. He cannot pay off his debts here, but will be able to do so in Ireland, where living is cheap. If he is recalled, as he hopes, `pray my Lord don't let any person you wish well to, succeed me, for he cannot possibly live here on his appointments, and this Court, the most oddly composed in Europe, will make him mad.'.
Date and place: 1741 Jan 28 Lisbon.
