Folio 214: Lord Tyrawly to Duke of Newcastle. Bitter complaints of the `caprice, stubbornness, or ignorance' of the R.N. captains, `vices most of them are tainted with.' He has no control whatever over them during their stay in the Tagus, where they call chiefly for the purpose of taking contraband gold back to England. If no effectual steps can be taken to curb this abuse he would rather be recalled home and posted to military duty in Ireland.
Date and place: 1741 Jan 7 Lisbon.
