Folio 48: Lord Tyrawly to Duke of Newcastle. Dispatches for Rear-Admiral Haddock (f.38) have been forwarded to Gibraltar. His efforts to persuade King John V that his true interest lies in the English alliance and not with France or Spain. He will renew and press these, now that war with Spain seems certain. Portuguese Court is pro-French and Cardinal da Mota in close correspondence with Cardinal Fleury. If Tyrawly were promoted from envoy to ambassador, this would greatly increase his prestige and influence at Court, as was the case with John Methuen in 1700-1702.
