Folio 42: Duke of Newcastle to Lord Tyrawly. Reasons of the British Crown and government for preparing for a war with Spain. Tyrawly is to explain these to King John V and his ministers, and incite the Portuguese to enter into a defensive and offensive alliance against Spain which will enable them to achieve the security of Nova Colonia and the settlement of their claims outstanding from the Treaty of Utrecht. Regarding the Portuguese request for assistance against the Marathas, further clarification is required from King John V, and once this is forthcoming King George II `will be ready to do all that can be reasonably desired or expected of him.'.
