Folio 301: Sir John Norris to Duke of Newcastle. Defends himself against Portuguese allegations. Is convinced Portugal is in no danger of an attack from Spain, nor can Spain possibly mount a naval expedition in support of the Pretender, as Tyrawly's private intelligence alleges (ff.268, 270). If he and his squadron were ordered to return home immediately, `the Court of Portugal would soon change their language,' and drop their demand to rake up all the old Utrecht Treaty issues. Encloses reassuring reports from Cadiz (ff.306, 308).
Date and place: 1736 Feb 24 Lisbon.
