Folio 282: Lord Tyrawly to Duke of Newcastle. Complains bitterly of Sir John Norris who in three recent interviews with the Secretary of State has flatly refused to take any notice of latter's verbal request for British support against Spanish aggression at Nova Colonia, Rio de la Plata. King John V is very upset and has told Tyrawly that a Spanish attack on Nova Colonia was equivalent to one on Lisbon and hence Britain was bound to supply naval assistance when requested to do so. Norris insists on a formal written request, and the King feels greatly insulted.
Date and place: 1736 Feb 19 Lisbon.
