Folio 252: Lord Tyrawly to Duke of Newcastle. Does not know the state of the affair of the seizure of diamonds belonging to Messrs. Barrel & Co. but will find out and help if he can. As regards claim of the Oporto Factory for a place for public Protestant worship, Portuguese are adamant in maintaining that the Treaty right is for private worship only and Tyrawly is inclined to agree with them. Will do what he can, but doubtful of success as the Cardinal Inquisitor-General is so closely concerned in it. Encloses more copies of correspondence with the Dutch Resident (ff.258-62), `who is eternally in disputes and brangles with all mankind', and is universally unpopular at Lisbon. Hopes the joint-mediators will inaugurate the negotiations without delay, as otherwise the impatient King John V may become disillusioned and listen to his many pro-French advisers.
Date and place: 1736 Jan 7 Lisbon.
