Folio 150: Lord Tyrawly to Duke of Newcastle. Hotly denies that he ever tried to widen the breach between Spain and Portugal, and explains at length how he gave conciliatory advice to the Spanish ambassador. Also denies he ever wanted to be made C-in-C of the Portuguese army (as reported in England), although he is in very great favour with King John V, whose intelligence and character he highly extolls. Portuguese are raising difficulties over the acceptance of the States-General as co-mediators in addition to England and France. Complains bitterly of the Dutch Resident, who is sending to Madrid false and tendentious information on Anglo-Portuguese relations.
Date and place: 1735 Aug 26 Lisbon.
