Folio 207: Lord Tyrawly to Duke of Newcastle. Elaborate justification for his having notified all British captains and masters that they should not receive on board their ships any Portuguese who had not got a pass from the Secretary of State, to which Newcastle had objected. Explains the difficulties which would have ensued had he refused to do so. Adds that in any case ship's captains will continue to accept refugee Portuguese Jews `whenever a purse of gold shall be offered them, which has always been and will continue to be the motive for these practices.' Hopes to get restitution of the remaining Moorish goods confiscated by the Governor of Mazagão (f.130). Portuguese still pressing hard, if unofficially, through the Jesuit [Carbone] for Tyrawly to be promoted to ambassador and make the first visit to the Secretary of State. Explains why.
