Folio 196: Lord Tyrawly to Duke of Newcastle. Asks him to keep him in well with the Queen (acting as Regent during the King's absence in Hanover), by emphasizing how he is keeping things quiet in Lisbon. Explains the advantages of his private friendship with Cardinal da Mota and the Jesuit [Carbone]. His intrigue for the promotion of a friendly judge. Complains of the vast expense of Lisbon, high cost of living, need for bribing influential people, and the inveterate propensity of the Portuguese to cadge for presents and welch on their debts. Diamond earrings got over £1,000 for Madame Da Cunha, which otherwise `she never would have seen a farthing of.' If only he is promoted to ambassador, his position in particular and things in general will greatly improve.
Date and place: 1732 June 27 Lisbon.
