Folio 181: Lord Tyrawly to Duke of Newcastle. Acknowledges Newcastle's friendly hint `that the readiest way to serve myself at home, is to keep things quiet here.' Is doing his best and only reports to Newcastle when matters are really serious. Expatiates on the difficulties of his position between the obstreperous Factory members on the one hand and the capricious King John V on the other. His great friendship with the Jesuit [Padre Carbone] and latter's hint that King John V would be much more favourable to English pretensions if his own vanity were placated by British Envoy being upgraded to ambassador. Analysis of the great value and importance of British trade in Portugal. Strongly urges that British government should use all fair means to satisfy King John V's vanity if they are not prepared to use forceful means against him.
Date and place: 1732 June 6 Lisbon.
