Folio 153: Lord Tyrawly to Duke of Newcastle. Lengthy account of the seizure of contraband gold and diamonds in the last Rio de Janeiro Fleet. Involvement of Messrs. Auriol and Pratviel. His own intervention and the tortuous intrigues used through his `Caldas friend' [i.e. Padre Carbone S.J.] to secure Auriol's release. His correspondence with Mendonça Corte-Real on this incident (in French) and his interview with him. Consternation of the British Factory. He has made protests and representations against this breach of Treaty privilege but so far without success.
