Description

Folio 119: Lord Tyrawly to Charles Delafaye. Insinuates Royal Navy officers are reluctant to obey King George II's recent decision not to allow any Portuguese to take passage with them, as `few of them care what disputes they engage us in, if they can get money forthemselves' by taking bribes from unauthorized passengers. Asks him to induce Newcastle to support the Portuguese Court's unofficial suggestion that he should be promoted to ambassador, and the enormous benefits that will accrue to British trade if he is. Will pay 500 guineas to anyone Delafaye indicates if he can bring this about. If the British government declines to pander to King John's vanity (`his darling patron'), Tyrawly fears `we shall be on a worse foot than ever.'.
