Folio 40: Lord Tyrawly to Duke of Newcastle. Long and amusing account of King John V's infatuation with the building of Mafra and the economic dislocation and confusion in the whole country. The King and his ministers will do no other business; the British Factoryis also very troublesome; and Tyrawly renews his urgent request for a transfer elsewhere, as Galvão has died and is unlikely to be replaced at London. If H.M. government will not take a tough line with the Portuguese, as he advocates, then it is a waste of time and money to keep a British minister at Lisbon.
Date and place: 1730 Sept 22 Lisbon.
