Description

Folio 36: Lord Tyrawly to Duke of Newcastle. Complains of King John V's oppression of local British merchants, `who undergoe all the consequences of arbitrary government that the King of Portugal's own subjects do, who are greater slaves than the Moors.' Does his best to obtain redress and keep Factory from complaining to the Parliamentary opposition in England, which would be very dangerous. Advocates bringing Portuguese to heel by threatening to intercept a Brazil Fleet. Finds his job at Lisbon very irksome and asks again for a transfer to Barbados or elsewhere.
