Folio 249: Duke of Newcastle to Lord Tyrawly and Sir John Norris. They are to emphasize to Mendonça Corte-Real that in King George II's considered opinion the Rio de la Plata incident `is neither a sufficient cause for the King of Portugal to proceed to hostilitiesagainst Spain or to demand H.M. assistance against that Crown.' They must make this crystal clear to Portuguese government. King is very concerned to see that the personal differences of opinion between them still subsist. This must stop, and they must revert to the joint-report system, as already ordered, and Sir John Norris' attitude is the correct one. King George is very reluctant to have the Utrecht Treaty disputes mixed up with this one, but is prepared to support Portuguese claims over the former once this dispute is out of the way. Pacific intentions of the Spanish Crown, by all accounts. They are to tell the King of Portugal, politely but firmly, that he will get no British support if he starts a war with Spain.
