Folio 235: Duke of Newcastle to Lord Tyrawly and Sir John Norris. Sends copies of Azevedo's memorial to King George II concerning Spanish aggression in the Rio de la Plata against the Portuguese and the reply thereto (wanting). The King rejects the Portuguese contention that this incident means the beginning of hostilities by Spain. On the contrary, it is a local one, which can be settled separately. King fears the Portuguese government is trying to involve him in hostilities with Spain, and Tyrawly and Norris must do their best to dissuade Portuguese from taking any offensive action and make it clear they will get no British support if they do. Encloses extract of a letter from Keene (wanting), and all indications show that Spaniards have no intention of attacking Portugal. Progress of the joint mediation, and copies of relevant correspondence with Lord Waldegrave (wanting). They are to keep Keene informed of their doings.
Date and place: 1736 Mar 15 London.
