Folio 224: Duke of Newcastle to Lord Tyrawly and Sir John Norris. Encloses copies of the reciprocal declarations signed at Vienna concerning the general peace preliminaries (wanting). Comments on Spain's attitude. Regarding the joint-mediation, the great difficultyis the Portuguese wish to have their outstanding Utrecht Treaty claims on Spain settled at the same time as this dispute over the diplomatic incident at Madrid. Newcastle's discussion with Azevedo on this [pencil note in margin: `left out']. They are to talk with Mendonça Corte-Real and endeavour to persuade him in `the most friendly manner' of the inexpediency of mixing these two separate disputes. Dom Luis da Cunha may also have made representations in this sense.
