Folio 149: Duke of Newcastle to Lord Tyrawly. Is very surprised and concerned at his private letter of July 7 N.S. Many people here are convinced that Tyrawly was encouraging rather than calming King John V's resentment against Spain, and that he was hoping to be C-in-C of the Portuguese army in the event of a war. He has been very indiscreet in his letter to Mendonça Corte-Real. Newcastle disclaims all responsibility for the fact that Tyrawly has not received the army promotion for which he (and King John V) asked. Newcastle did his best to get Tyrawly the extra allowance, and has got the Queen to sign the warrant for it without any restriction such as the King had imposed (f.134). Rejects Tyrawly's complaint that he is not sufficiently informed.
