Folio 128: Duke of Newcastle to Lord Tyrawly and Sir John Norris. Acknowledges their joint dispatch of June 21 N.S. Queen very much approves of the way they have carried out their orders to impress on King John V and Mendonça Corte-Real that the sending of Norris'sfleet is purely a defensive and precautionary measure, and that King of Portugal is now in a more conciliatory mood and has declared he has no intention of starting a war with Spain. Norris is particularly commended for having told the King that `if he was the aggressor, your postive orders were not to give him any assistance.' King George will readily agree to a joint mediation with France `if it should be proposed in a proper manner and by proper parties.' Sends copies of relevant papers by Keene and Patiño (all wanting). No intention of sending land forces to aid Portugal. Wassenaer (f.69) should be closely watched, as he may be a dangerous intriguer.
Date and place: 1735 June 27 London.
