Folio 114: Duke of Newcastle to Sir John Norris. Queen is pleased with his activity and hopes his squadron will sail with the first fair wind. Encloses copies of correspondence from Tyrawly at Lisbon and Benjamin Keene at Madrid, etc. (all wanting). Although King of Spain has politely declined English mediation he has accepted that of France. Norris and Tyrawly are jointly to `use your utmost endeavours to dissuade the King of Portugal from beginning hostilities against Spain,' and to inform him that if he does, he will get no help from Norris's squadron or Great Britain. Is to keep a watchful eye on French and Spanish fleets. Has just received news he has sailed from Spithead.
