Folio 84: King George II's instructions for Sir John Norris as Admiral and C-in-C of the Fleet to be employed on the coast of Portugal. Emphasizing that the principle objective is the security of the Brazil Fleets, `as well as to protect the trade and commerce of Portugal, which is of such importance to these kingdoms, from any attack on the part of any power whatsoever.' He is, however to use his utmost endeavours to dissuade John V from beginning any hostilities against Spain, and urge the acceptance of King George's good offices as mediator. All possible endeavours should be used to get the Brazil Fleets home in the summer that Norris' squadron may return home by the end of October. Arrangements for storeships, hulks, etc. at Lisbon. He is to cooperate closely with Tyrawly and is given full powers to do so, together with copies of all relevant treaties etc. (wanting). Arrangements for securing information from all consuls etc, as to French and Spanish naval movements. Conditions under which he should return with all or detach a part of his fleet.
