Folio 41: Duke of Newcastle to Lord Tyrawly. Encloses copies of two letters to him from the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty concerning the `pernicious practice of counterfeiting the Admiralty passes' and distributing them in Portugal to persons not entitled to them (wanting). This is a very ticklish problem, in which Tyrawly must proceed with great care, closely consulting Mendonça Corte-Real before making any representation to King John V. If Portuguese prior approval can be obtained, British subjects concerned should be sent in a warship to Ireland for trial, and Portuguese punished locally, but this can only be asked as a favour and not as a right. Tyrawly must continue to work closely with Consul Compton in this and other matters, as he is doing now.
Date and place: 1731 Mar 5 London.
