Folio 302: James Dormer to Duke of Newcastle. Has received his letter of Nov. 10, but cannot interview the Secretary of State since he has been forbidden access to him and to the Court. Particular objection having been taken to one of his servants using pistols on the occasion of the beating up of Burnett, he encloses copies of decrees showing England and their employees have a right to carry firearms by treaty (f.307) and adduces other precedents from Papal and Spanish envoys. Begs for Newcastle's intercession with the King as he fears that Galvão `has orders to make the strongest and most vehement representations against me.' Latest intelligence from Madrid and elsewhere about Franco-Spanish diplomatic relations and Portuguese reactions thereto. Court of Portugal may want to revive good relations with France, but this will be very difficult as neither side will back down over the protocol problem. Problems arising in Portuguese trade with Spain, and delay in the exchange of the two royal princesses involved in the double marriages. Latest news of the Flota from Cadiz. King of Portugal has given orders for the arrest of the Dutch contractors of the tobacco monopoly. Court news.
