Folio 285v: James Dormer to Diogo de Mendonça Corte-Real. Protests that his servants had no orders to kill Burnett but only to drag him from his carriage and beat him up in the street. This they tried to do, but a general fracas ensued in which Burnett was wounded. One of his servants did fire a pistol but only to kill a dog which was attacking his horse. Deeply regrets if his conduct has offended the King of Portugal, which is the last thing he wishes to do.
Date and place: 1727 Oct 23 Lisbon.
