Folio 279: James Dormer to Duke of Newcastle. Refers to enclosed copy of his letter to Mendonça Corte-Real (f.285v) for a true account of what happened on 22 Oct. Has received intolerable provocation from Burnett, who has been drawing `the Nobility to assemble constantly at his house', to the discredit and disparagement of Dormer. This culminated in Burnett's insulting letter to him over the Coronation party (f.287) and his party on the King of Portugal's birthday. Dormer did not design to murder Burnett as alleged in Mendonça Corte-Real's letter (f.285), but only to have him publicly beaten. Hopes Newcastle will set matter before the King in the best possible light; and in a p.s. of 30 Oct. encloses a more detailed account (f.282).
Date and place: 1727 Oct 28, NS Lisbon.
