Folio 179: James Dormer to Duke of Newcastle. Has not sent all the rest of the gunpowder to Gibraltar, as latest accounts agree that Spanish besiegers are very weak and likely to raise the siege. Reported secret agreement that if double marriages are concluded and Portugal fails to mediate a peace between `the allies of Hanover and those of Vienna', she will enter into a league offensive and defensive with Spain. Doubtful of this. Encloses copy of letter from the Dutch ambassador at Madrid (f.181). News from Gibraltar and Cadiz, with list of Spanish warships (f.183) and return of British casualties in siege of Gibraltar (f.185). Congratulations on the preliminaries signed at Paris by the Imperial, British, French, and Dutch Ministers.
Date and place: 1727 June 21, NS Lisbon.
