Folio 42: Thomas Burnett to Duke of Newcastle. Siege of Gibraltar begun, and one of his reliable local informants has read him a letter from Madrid about Count K"nigsegg's equivocal part. Marquis of Abrantes has left for Madrid, but is detained at Évora owing to the breakdown of his coach. Thinks he can be relied upon to advise the King `against any step that may cause a rupture with the maritime powers, especially when they are united with France.' New Governor and Provedor for Madeira will redress British grievances.
